Valladolid City Council aims to involve the entire innovation and economic development ecosystem of the city of Valladolid within a broad strategy of inclusion and participation of all key entities to achieve the goal of climate neutrality in the city.

Enabling Massive Change for Climate-Neutral Cities - Spanish cities ECT activity

Spanish Mission Cities must rapidly scale up deep energy renovation to meet 2030 climate targets. However, progress is hindered by fragmented efforts, regulatory complexity, limited financing, and governance misalignment. Building on the URBANEW pilot, this project unites six cities to co-develop integrated, city-wide missions that align local, regional, and national actors. By embedding social inclusion into urban regeneration, the project aims to mainstream large-scale building decarbonisation, foster citizen co-creation, and generate replicable models for systemic transformation across Europe. Multi-stakeholder Solutions for Urban Innovative & Systemic Regeneration: Spanish cities pilot activity

Seven Spanish cities worked together to accelerate urban regeneration through inclusive retrofitting, energy innovation, and citizen participation. URBANEW focused on co-designing renovation strategies with residents, promoting bio-based construction, supporting vulnerable groups, and building local capacity. By aligning regulatory, financial, and social levers, the consortium created models for deep decarbonisation of the built environment designed for Southern European conditions. Cities involved: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Vitoria-Gasteix, Valladolid, Zaragoza.

Detailed Summary: Private Sector Engagement in the EU Cities Mission

This is a summary of a case study that provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of private sector engagement in four Mission Cities: Gothenburg (Sweden) Guimarães (Portugal) Budapest (Hungary) Valladolid (Spain)  These cities are early adopters of Climate City Contracts (CCCs), which are designed to catalyze collaborative climate governance involving a broad range of stakeholders, including the private sector.

H2020 funded REMOURBAN project

The H2020 funded REMOURBAN project had the ambition to accelerate the deployment of innovative technologies, organizational and economic solutions to increase energy efficiency, improve the sustainability of urban transport and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas. It selected 3 lighthouse cities to implement these goals in : Valladolid (Spain), Nottingham (UK) and Tepebasi (Turkey). PROSPECT+ fosters capacity building in regional and local authorities in order to finance and implement effective and efficient sustainable energy plans, including their proper monitoring and verification. https://www.h2020prospect.eu

They are mainly shade structures with a total or partial vegetated surface.  Shelters in Valladolid (Spain), URBAN GreenUP project There are different types of shading structure, depending on the structure design and the type of vegetation used, e.g. structure could be textile or wood; vegetation could be climbing and hanging plants; and installation could be fixed to the façades or done by posts. Parklets in Izmir (Turkey), URBAN GreenUP project (https://www.urbangreenup.eu/news--events/news/new-green-areas-to-enjoy-in-izmir.kl) Shading structures can be located in narrow streets or parks, or intalled in areas that need shaded spaces, such as squares or transport stops.They should be projected in compliance with safety conditions (access to fire brigade, cleaning services, etc.).

Kicking off a goal for sustainability in Valladolid

Valladolid has been at the forefront of climate action initiatives, and in recognition of these efforts, it was one of the first cities to be awarded the Mission Label by the European Commission. A key element of the city's success in promoting climate neutrality has been the development of communication and engagement campaigns in collaboration with the local football team, Real Valladolid.
