Scaffolding Emergence Canvas

Tool for Building Distributed Networks for Urban Transformation

The Scaffolding Emergence Canvas is a tool that supports cities that aim to create a distributed network for change. It guides municipalities beyond one-off engagement, fostering a collaborative ecosystem where cities work closely with frontrunners to shape and maintain a dynamic network for urban transformation. The canvas guides participants through the Quintuple Helix, obliging them to choose to which helix any stakeholder is part of.

Objectives of the Tool

  • Map stakeholders needed for a distributed network for change
  • Identify the role different actors have in your strategy (Pioneers, Allies, Mission Constellation)
  • Define concrete methods on how to engage stakeholders
  • Ensure the long-term sustainability and evolution of the network through continuous collaboration.

How it works

1. Map your key stakeholders

Start the exercise by mapping the different stakeholders you consider key to involve in creating a distributed network that facilitates a greater impact in the mission of ensuring a just and sustainable transition in your city.

Begin with the central circle, where you identify frontrunner actors who will be key as catalysts and drivers of the mission. In the second circle, identify key allies from different sectors, and finally, other organizations and individuals to involve as part of the constellation. Remember to work while thinking about specific organizations and even people with full names whom you know can be key to making our mission a reality.

2. Define methods of engagement

Now that you have identified the key actors, it’s time to define how and through which methods we intend to promote their participation in the mission. Identify at least two participation methods for each of the three circles. You can use the Engagement Building Block cards as a reference.

3 .Iterate and Adapt:

As your network evolves, periodically revisit the canvas to update stakeholders, roles, and engagement methods. Adaptability is key to maintaining a dynamic and responsive network that can meet emerging challenges and opportunities.
