The city of Barcelona is at the heart of a densely populated metropolitan area between mountains and sea. With 1.6 million inhabitants, it is the core of the largest metropolitan area of the Mediterranean coast of five million inhabitants. It is also a key economic area in Spain. Barcelona is committed to climate change action: the city has set itself the objective to reduce its CO2 emissions by 23% by 2020 on the basis of its Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP).
