"Prato is a vibrant, contradictory, innovative, conflictual city: a city that, since the beginning of the 20th century and particularly after the Second World War, has been a formidable urban, social, cultural and economic laboratory in which new models have often been experimented. Today, compared to international metropolises, it is a small city, but within it has all their complexity.

 

In fact, it is part of those medium-sized cities in which new social models of coexistence, new forms of production, and innovative ways of educating the younger generations are being experimented globally: medium-sized cities that are endowed with that flexibility, capacity to absorb change, and readiness for innovation necessary to verify the effects of these transformations in a short time and indicate new possible scenarios towards which to set out on the difficult path of overcoming the international economic crisis.

Sustainable Districts in Climate Change Scenario - Italian cities ECT activity

NZD reimagines how productive districts manage energy and water under the pressures of climate change. These districts—often overlooked in urban sustainability planning—are reframed as strategic sites for climate action. The project pilots integrated approaches to energy efficiency, renewable energy deployment, and water reuse, tailored to the unique needs of industrial and service districts. By introducing ISO-aligned energy management systems and co-designed interventions, NZD addresses fragmented resource governance and builds resilience to extreme climate events. The initiative aims to create a replicable framework for district-level sustainability and systemic innovation. Prato: Circular economy solutions & urban governance in a highly industrialised textile city

Prato, an Italian Mission City of 200,000 inhabitants, serves as a laboratory for social, industrial, and cultural innovation, advancing circular and industrial transition strategies while collaborating with peer cities to strengthen the implementation of its Climate City Contract. This document was prepared in advance of the Group Study Visit to outline the practices to be shared.
