Dublin, the capital city of Ireland, is situated on the eastern coast of the country, at the mouth of the River Liffey. With a population of over 1.3 million people, it serves as the economic, political, and cultural hub of Ireland. The city's economy is robust and diverse, with key sectors including information and communication technology, financial services, and the creative arts.

 

Dublin is making considerable strides in its climate action efforts. The city's Climate Change Action Plan 2019-2024 outlines its commitment to reduce emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The plan includes a range of measures spanning areas such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, flood resilience, and sustainable transport.

 

Spread over its 117 km2 are markers of a rich history and culture that have been shaping the city’s identity for over a millennium. The city is characterised by its medieval core around which stunning Georgian neighbourhoods with public squares providing a space for social and economic activities grew. These spaces continue to thrive and provide Dubliners with spots to relax and enjoy a bit of nature in the city; many make up Dublin’s network of parks. The Grand Canal and Royal Canal that envelop the inner city were once full of canal boats moving goods to and from the port to the city and to the rest of country.

 

Today, you will still see boats, but you will also see citizens cycling next to the canals on segregated paths or simply lingering and enjoying a moment. Dublin has a rich natural endowment, which has throughout its existence provided citizens of the city with opportunities to innovate and make Dublin the city it is today. A city that is leading in innovation, is thriving with culture, and is diverse. Moreover, in its 1000-year history, Dublin has defined itself as a city that is resilient; having experienced battles and struggles and in history that is more recent the impacts of the Great Recession, Dublin and its citizens always emerge stronger and more unified. Dublin brings out the best in its people, who make the city unique and give it its spirit.

 

As the city council responsible for the city, Dublin City Council develops and implements key statutory and non-statutory plans that shape life in the city. Dublin City Council’s Corporate Plan puts forward our vision and mission for both the city, and Dublin City Council, as an organisation and the principles by which we will be guided in all elements of our work on climate action.

BUILD CAPA-CITIES - Dublin and Cork pilot activity

Build Capa-cities is developing climate action capacity across Dublin and Cork City Councils through three approaches: new governance structures to embed climate leadership at senior level, innovation sandboxes to co- design public realm improvements with communities, and storytelling- based communication to engage staff and citizens in climate action in more accessible and compelling ways. Year 1 established foundations across all three initiatives, A director-level steering group now brings together 14 directors in Dublin City Council to collaboratively oversee climate action delivery and create a sense of ownership around the 121 cross departmental actions in the climate action plan. Cork City Council hosted several Sandboxes to engage citizens and stakeholders in reimagining public spaces and actively participate in co-designing physical street interventions. Dublin City Council also used sandboxes to engage with the community of the norther east inner city. Dublin City Council launched "City Stories" , a storytelling programme using personal leadership stories to build climate engagement with staff, stakeholders and the public.

In collaboration with the OECD, Dublin City Council shares its experience in applying a systems and challenge-led approach for the transformation of a neighbourhood into one in which children can move freely, safely, and playfully. The webinar is interactive and provides a space for peer learning on working beyond silos for the implementation of transformative policies.
