Dresden is located in the south-eastern part of the Free State of Saxony, which borders on German territory (Bavaria, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg) as well as Czech and Polish territory.

The layout of the city is characterised by the widening of the Elbe. Dresden is located in the border triangle of Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland on the banks of the Elbe. The foothills of the Eastern Ore Mountains, the Lusatian Granite Plateau and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains make up the attractive surroundings of the Saxon state capital. At 32,828 hectares, the city area is larger than average (fourth largest German city) and has differences in altitude of almost 200 metres.

The urban structure has developed in a polycentric manner. Today, Dresden is an important cultural city throughout Europe; its economy and population are developing dynamically. The city has the densest network of research institutions in Europe, is home to the only German university of excellence in the new federal states and is Europe's most important chip centre. Also known as the "Gateway to Central Europe", it maintains close, historically grown relations with neighbouring countries and is in intensive exchange with both eastern and western European cities.
