The Sarajevo Functional Urban Area (FUA) is a metropolitan coordination area centred on Sarajevo, bringing together multiple jurisdictions—including Sarajevo Canton and the City of East Sarajevo—to jointly address urban development and environmental challenges. Through its engagement with NetZeroCities under the EU Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, Sarajevo FUA has made significant progress on climate action, most notably by developing its Climate City Contract, which outlines a pathway to climate neutrality by 2030. The initiative has emphasized strong multi-level governance and citizen participation, including public forums and co-creation processes, while advancing actions in areas such as sustainable mobility, clean energy, and air quality—positioning Sarajevo FUA as a leading example of climate transition in the Western Balkans.
