The city of Lappeenranta is strongly committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The city has been a pioneer in climate action for several years. The first climate program of the city was approved as early as 2009, and the 30 % emission reduction target of this initial climate program was achieved ahead of schedule in 2015.

 

The city joined the HINKU network in 2014, and at the same time, the emission reduction target was set at 80 % reduction by 2030. The city's new climate program was approved in 2021, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The City Strategy 2037, also approved in 2021, emphasizes sustainable urban development and carbon neutrality as one of its strategic objectives and CO2 emissions are one of the main indicators
