Eilat is Israel's southermost city and the country's only outpost on the shores of the Red Sea, located at a strategic point between Jordan and Egypt. Home to 68,000 residents and 3 milion tourists a year, one of the challenges faced by the city is the tourist district which is a high energy consumer. Hence, through our TourZero Pilot (Second cohort - May 2024 to 2026) we are looking to accelerate the decarbonization of the tourism industry by working closely with 3 hotels going through a climate champion program that we are tailoring with Ben Gurion University. In parallel, the pilot includes living labs and a climate acceleration hub to involve the broader community and co-create together the solutions we need.
Due to its hyper-arid desert climate, small size, remoteness from other communities, and lack of employment diversification, Eilat faces unique challenges making it more susceptible to extreme climate and economic events. The City of Eilat has set resilience as the top priority, committed to ensuring its citizens and visitors a safe space, extreme heat mitigation, employment opportunities, and an improved quality of life. Climate adaptation and mitigation will help the city achieve these goals, reducing energy poverty, diversifying jobs through innovation deployment, enhancing businesses' economic and climate resilience, improving well-being and health and many more co-benefits.
Eilat is striving for citywide carbon neutrality and has been operating 11 Horizon and ENI projects that focus on renewable energy, transportation, urban resilience, wastewater and net-zero buildings. Eilat aims to become the Silicon Valley for renewable energy in Israel and the world. 100% of the city's daily consumption is currently generated by solar PV and 100% usage 24/7 is expected by 2030.
We are leading numerous R&D projects and innovative pilots in the fields of coastal protection, sustainable development, green energy and smart transportation. Sustainable development is our key priority and we have a designated Smart City team of professionals who are dedicated to implementing innovative and sustainable solutions in the Eilat region.
We are always interested to exchange knowledge and expeirence with other cities, feel free to reach out to us at adminEUprojects@eilat.muni.il
