Bratislava has taken concrete steps to enhance its climate governance, including establishing a dedicated Climate Office, appointing a Vice-Mayor for Climate, and launching new participatory bodies such as the Climate Advisory Committee and Climate Leaders Forum.

 

A key innovation proposed by the Climate City Contract is its emphasis on engaging children and young people, who are disproportionately affected by climate change, and ensuring intergenerational equity in the city’s transition efforts. The city will use existing participation platforms, such as Climathon and City for Children programme, to ensure that specific needs and views of children and young people are represented in the city climate policies and projects

Best and Worst Practices in Local Energy Transition

Presented during the NetZeroCities Spring School, this resource shares real-world city experiences from Athens, Bratislava, Differdange and Lappeenranta, highlighting both successful energy transition practices and implementation challenges. It covers examples such as heating management in municipal care facilities, solar PV deployment on public buildings, energy-efficient renovation, urban energy planning, multi-level governance, citizen engagement, and barriers to scaling renewable energy.

Multi-Actor Collaboration and Private Sector Engagement in the Cities Mission

This report explores how five European Mission cities - Lund, Leuven, Mannheim, Milan and Bratislava - are using multi-actor collaboration and private sector engagement as core governance mechanisms for advancing climate-neutrality implementation. Building on the first edition of NetZeroCities case work on multi-actor collaboration, the report extends the comparative analysis to a second set of city cases and focuses on the practical governance arrangements, instruments and engagement processes through which cities seek to mobilise companies and other non-state actors around Climate City Contract implementation.

Reducing Building Emissions and Energy Use - Slovakian cities pilot activity

Slovakia's two largest cities joined forces with ETP Slovakia, a nonprofit focused on vulnerable groups, to tackle building emissions through a comprehensive approach: implementing energy management in municipal buildings, engaging the private sector in reducing commercial building energy use, preventing energy poverty, and sharing best practices with other cities. The project recognises that effective energy management requires not just technical systems but institutional transformation — breaking down silo mentalities, creating new professional roles, and building communities of practice across municipal structures.
